How to use your blood pressure monitor (upper arm) at home

To monitor your blood pressure using an automatic blood pressure monitor, find a comfortable place to sit with good back support at a table or desk.

When you're ready to take your blood pressure, sit quietly for three to five minutes beforehand.

First, make sure you place your feet flat on the floor. Then rest your arm on a tabletop at a level that is roughly even with your heart. Rest against the back of your chair, then extend your arm, palm upward. 

Wrap the cuff around your bare upper arm about one inch above the bend of your elbow. You need to ensure that the tubing falls over the front centre of your arm. This will ensure the proper placement of the sensor. You want the cuff to be tight enough so that you can only slip two fingertips under the top edge. This way your skin shouldn't pinch when your cuff inflates. 

After you've been sitting for a couple of minutes press start. Remain still while the machine begins measuring. At this time the cuff will inflate, then slowly deflate so that the machine can take your measurement. The monitor will display your blood pressure and pulse on the digital panel when the reading is complete. If you've positioned your cuff incorrectly and the monitor doesn't record a reading, simply reposition the cuff correctly and try again. Wait another one to two minutes before taking another measurement.
